Sacred Heart Aikido Center – Cebu (SHACC)

Weapons Class

Sacred Heart Aikido Center – Cebu weapons training is based on Iwama style methodology taught by Saburo Takayasu Sensei, 7th Dan Shihan. He’s the Chief Instructor and President of the Takemusu Aiki Association Inc. based in Australia. He studied at Ibaraki University and trained at both the university’s Aikido dojo and Iwama Dojo from 1967 to 1973 under the tutelage of his teacher, Morihiro Saito Sensei 9th dan.  He was present at the last class taught by O’Sensei in Iwama in 1969.

Aikido movements are based on classical samurai sword movements during Japan’s war torn era. The training instills the students the importance of ma-ai or the distance between you and your aggressor. Weapons training primarily focuses on bokken ( aiki-ken ) and jo ( aiki-jo ), but it does not imply that both armed and un-armed systems are separated. It is rather the opposite, it is to develop a deeper understanding of combined approaches to movement with and without the weapons. To give a deeper meaning and history of un-armed techniques that are based on weapons movement. These are practical techniques that, when properly understood and applied, gives a more dynamic and effective self-defence system.
